Financial planning in the UK and USA rarely draws many parallels – the tax processes are very different, and there are plenty of changes coming down the track as political changes continue to unfold.
However, last week was National Estate Planning Awareness Week in the United States, a week dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of financial legacy planning. We’ve been pondering how the UK compares in its awareness and adoption of the estate planning process?
A cultural priority
In the US, estate planning is widely promoted as a pillar of financial wellness. From wills and trusts to healthcare directives and tax-efficient legacy planning, Americans are encouraged to think ahead, not just for their own peace of mind, but to protect loved ones from unnecessary stress and financial hardship.
National Estate Planning Awareness Week is more than a symbolic gesture. The campaign was adopted in 2008 by the House of Representatives to shine a spotlight on the importance of estate planning, and it has been hugely effective. It’s a coordinated effort involving financial advisors, estate planners and even charities to educate the public.
Lagging behind?
However, despite its success, nothing similar has made its way across the pond. Estate planning in the UK often remains a reactive process, usually triggered by life events rather than proactively being built into financial planning.
While many of us have a basic will and potentially Power of Attorney, fewer consider the broader implications of estate planning: inheritance tax, probate complexity or the emotional toll on families.
This gap may stem from cultural differences. In the UK, estate planning is often bundled into legal services or seen as a niche concern for the wealthy. However, whether you’re in Tunbridge Wells or Texas, giving a thought to estate planning before it becomes a necessary requirement offers clear benefits:
- Clarity and control: Decide who inherits what, and how.
- Tax efficiency: Reduce inheritance tax liabilities with smart planning.
- Family harmony: Avoid disputes and confusion during emotionally difficult times.
- Probate support: Streamline the legal process with professional help, minimising stress and reducing the cost burden.
At Auker Hutton, we regularly support clients through probate – the legal process of administering someone’s estate. It’s a task that can be complex, time-consuming and emotionally draining, but with proper planning, it doesn’t have to be.
Protecting your financial legacy
Estate planning isn’t about anticipating death, it’s about making sure your financial legacy reflects your values, protects your loved ones and avoids unnecessary costs or delays.
There is no doubt that the US leads the way in awareness, but there’s no reason that UK households can’t catch up. If you’ve already taken steps to manage your personal finances, estate planning is the next logical move.
